šŸ˜Just so cringe...

Last night my teenage daughter told me, ā€œMom, youā€™re such a Millennial.ā€

This was the conversation that followed:

Me: ā€œIā€™m not even a Millennial. I was born in 1978. That makes me GenX. I identify as GenXā€

Daughter: ā€œWell you still act like a Millennial.ā€

Me: ā€œWhat does that even mean? What does a Millennial act like?ā€

Daughter: ā€œYouā€™re just so cringe.ā€

Oh, teenagers.

So in case youā€™re wondering, some of the ā€œcringeā€ things that we ā€œMillennialsā€ do include:

  • Taking photos in portrait mode.

  • Using emojis in our text messages (especially the šŸ˜ emoji)

  • Trying to be funny, especially with pop culture references

  • Wearing skinny jeans

  • Being obsessed with Harry Potter or the Office

  • Using Millennial slang, such as YOLO

  • Wearing invisible socks with your sneakers

And by the way, itā€™s also cringe for Millennials to talk about being cringe, which basically makes this entire email Iā€™m writing beyond cringe (and also why I was not allowed to mention said daughter by name).

But hereā€™s the thing about reaching a certain ageā€¦

Who cares if weā€™re cringe?

Because whatever generation I officially belong to, thereā€™s no hiding the fact that I have fully entered what I am affectionately referring to as my Midlife Era.

(See what I did there with the pop culture Taylor Swift reference? So cringe.)

Itā€™s when your kids start growing up and leaving the nest.

When your hormones start changing, and you get to experience hot flashes and other equally fun symptoms of perimenopause.

When your favorite songs from the 90ā€™s are now available on the ā€œClassic Rockā€ station.

But also when youā€™re finally old enough to stop taking yourself too seriously, and to stop giving a crap what other people think, because after raising teenagers youā€™ve learned how to develop a very thick skin. šŸ˜‚

In fact, Iā€™d dare say that my favorite thing about being in my 40ā€™s is that Iā€™m finally beyond actually caring what other people think of me.

Yep, I kinda LOVE this phase of life.

Because itā€™s also a new beginning.

A time where you get to start thinking about what you actually want for this second half of your life. The half where you might not be cool, but at least you have your šŸ’© together.

Where YOU get to decideā€¦

What do you want to do?

Where do you want to go?

Who do you want to be?

Because despite what Gen Z thinks about you, your life is far from over.

George Orwell once wrote, ā€œeach generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it.ā€ Along those same lines, Charles M. Schulz, wisely noted that ā€œif I were given the opportunity to present a gift to the next generation, it would be the ability for each individual to learn to laugh at himself.

In other words? Weā€™re only just getting started.

And so, my challenge for you this week, if you havenā€™t taken the time to ask yourself some of those big questions lately, is to do that. Spend a little time reflecting on what you actually want from this next phase of your life. If it helps, go through my free Self-Discovery Workbook to guide you through the process.

But make this YOUR best era yet.

Then hit reply to this email and let me know all about it!

Live with purpose, friend, and have an amazing week!

xoxo, Ruth
