When you just gotta get it done…
Happy Tuesday Friend,
Tonight we’re closing the doors to Living Well Spending Less forever.
And I’m pretty sure next week, when all the dust has settled, I’ll have a little more time to reflect and ponder, and all the emotion will hit me like a ton of bricks.
But this week, I honestly don’t have a moment to spare.
Do you ever have seasons like that?
This coming Saturday we’re hosting my daughter Maggie’s graduation party, which has required pretty much every ounce of our attention and energy to prepare for.
It’s amazing how those things kinda just sneak up on you.
When we bought our home in the country last September, graduation still felt very far away.
We thought we had plenty of time.
Ever the optimist, I wasn’t even worried.
But to be honest, all I could see was the potential—a resort-style pool with a big outdoor kitchen and a fun game room with a pool table.
In my mind, I could already see all the fun parties we’d throw, and the amazing memories we’d make.
After all, our big vision is to have a place where people can gather.
Never mind the fact that in reality, the pool and surrounding deck were in a sad state of disrepair, the surrounding beds were covered in weeds and overgrown brush, the dilapidated outdoor kitchen was full of rust and not actually functioning in any way, and the game room was a dirty, dusty disaster with a pool table so badly in need of resurfacing that it was barely usable.
And so, these last few months have been a blur of non-stop painting and cleaning and pressure washing and scrubbing and digging and weeding and a million other tasks to try to pull it all together.
We’re almost there, and with just days to go, I do actually think we’re going to make it, but probably without a second to spare.
So maybe next week I’ll have some time to rest and reflect.
But this week I just gotta get it done.
And maybe you can relate to that.
And if the season you’re in right now also feels a little crazy or intense, or you’re just wondering how you’ll make it to next week with everything you’ve got on your plate right now, please know that you’re definitely not alone.
But also know this: no season lasts forever.
Frances Chan once said, “true joy is formed in the midst of the most difficult seasons of life.” Along those same lines, Wes Fesler advised us to “cherish every season of life; for without coldness there is no comfort in warmth, and without darker days there is no joy in light.”
In other words? This too shall pass.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve often found that when I look back on crazy seasons like these, they’re where some of the best memories are made.
And so, my challenge for you this week is to keep going. If this is your season to just buckle down and get it done, then know that I’m rooting for you. But also know that the work you’re doing now is preparing you for even better things in the future.
Live with purpose, friend, and have a wonderful week!
xoxo, Ruth
